Every year the national organization of American Mothers ® – the official sponsor of Mother’s Day – highlights one state winner from each state as the Mother of the Year with all the state winners attending the national conference in April for the crowning of the National Mother of the Year. Oklahoma is proud to announce this year’s 2017 Oklahoma Mother of the Year – Anita Webb. And what a great choice!
Anita Webb has been married 39 years to Alan with two children: Tyler, a neurologist, and Brianne, who works for a nonprofit. Anita has two grandchildren. Out of Anita’s compassion for the underprivileged children who would not get gifts at Christmas, Anita and Alan established a nonprofit 32 years ago called Santa’s Cause providing anonymous, last minute response to children’s letters to Santa that would otherwise go unanswered. Oklahoma City Public School counselors refer families in need, and then volunteer Santa’s surprise recipients at their home. Adults dress up like Santa and make a surprise visit to the home to shower gifts and read the Christmas story. My husband and I have personally been on these unannounced visits, with my husband dressed as Santa. It was an incredibly heart-warming experience to see the tears of joy in the eyes of the children and parents. With 600 volunteers each year (and no staff), Santa’s Cause has served more than 30,000 children since 1985.
In addition, Anita has served Oklahoma mothers well for over 30 years as a fundraiser for Birth Choice (pro-life), raising over $150,000 each year. When her children entered junior high and began to participate in extracurricular activities, Anita left her job and became a full-time mom. Despite the generous time she devoted to volunteering, she never missed either of her kids’ church youth group or extracurricular events. She was the first mom to offer to drive the kids’ friends to away games, chaperoning both of her children’s senior trips and prom lock-ins. Also, Anita has served the community as a substitute teacher who became known as “everyone’s mom.” Anita’s home continues to be “the hot spot” for family and friends to gather.
I am so proud to share this wonderful lady with all of you – ANITA WEBB – the 2017 Oklahoma Mother of Year! Congratulations, Anita!
