Exercise Made Simple

January 12, 2015

As a single mom, who has time to exercise? While research shows that women should workout 45 minutes a day, it seems that only Hollywood stars would have time for such a luxury. And besides, they probably have an in-house trainer.

But don’t lose heart. Short bursts of exercise can be equally as effective. For the busy mom, that’s good news. One study showed that women who split their exercise into 10-minute increments were more likely to exercise consistently and lost more weight after five months than those Hollywood glamour girls who exercised 45-60 minutes a day.

So why not try out these smaller chunk exercises around the house?

Got a minute to stretch? Remember the song, “Heads, shoulders, knees, and toes?” Start there – for 10 minutes.

Going to the mailbox? Don’t stop there. Take a brisk 5-minute power walk in one direction up the street and then back.

Cooking dinner? Do standing push-ups while you wait for the pot to boil. Stand an arms’ length from the kitchen counter and push your elbows back and forth.

Kids playing basketball? Go outside and shoot 20 hoops.

Waiting for the clothes to dry? Do 150 jumping jacks. A 150 pound woman can burn 90 calories in 10 minutes.

Got the idea? I wonder how many stolen moments there are in the day that could be turned into calorie-burning, body-shaping, mind-cleansing moments. Maybe we should try it. I know that habits start somewhere.
