Is it a Dog or a Lion?

Creativity blesses folks. If you don’t believe me, why do you think Pinterest is such a huge hit? We love to find the simple become spectacular or the mundane become marvelous. For example, take my granddaughter’s fourth birthday party, an “under the sea” theme. The tuna crab cakes were a glorious hit and everyone simply adored the jelly fish made out of paper lanterns and the octopus blown into creation by a balloon. Why do we get such a kick over something so elementary? It’s because we were made in God’s image, and because He is creative, it resonates inside of us in a good way.

Yet, I’m not sure we intentionally and on purpose celebrate this blessing of creativity. We’re often too smothered under the pressure of motherhood, work, or life that something as frivolous as “cleverness” never comes to the surface for us to either enjoy or employ.

As I was contemplating this amazing, overlooked blessing of creativity on my recent vacation to Crested Butte, CO, I heard children behind me laughing and musing with delight over their newfound friend: a dog. No wonder they were captivated! Who would have thought of giving their pet a haircut shaped like a lion? Scores of adults and children crowded around the scene tickled with joy. So ingenious. So fun. So engaging. A momentary thrill but a lasting memory. Yet a number of pedestrians passed by totally oblivious to this unique gem in their midst.

They say that the average person takes between 4,000 and 5,000 steps a day. What a shame to go to bed each night having seen nothing worth remembering in this beautiful world. As for me, I’m gonna keep my eyes wide open.

Oops – I just found another memorable treasure! What? A metal couch for the living room?
