Is Your Child’s Mouth Zipped Shut?

July 14, 2014

What do you do as a single mom when your child’s mouth is zipped shut and won’t talk? Single moms often tell me their children are bothered or depressed and they don’t know what to do to help them.

Have you tried these? It might be painful for you, but encourage your child to express his or her feelings. Let them “get it out” – and when they do, don’t defend yourself or lash back. Be quiet and respond PATIENTLY.

It’s helpful to remember that the sole purpose of that conversation is to let them voice how they feel. An open expression of feelings always sets the atmosphere for a healthier home. You’ll be surprised how your communication will be enhanced if you encourage them to be honest with their emotions.

Hey, friend, in order to be right, you have to be real.
