Over the years journaling has been a life-changing practice of mine. In fact, every late December I set out to find the perfect spiral notebook. In the last five years, manufactures must have had me in mind because now I can buy a spiral notebook with a fancy design on the front cover. Woo hoo!
I must be a creature of habit because for the last 30 years – (yes, since 1986) – my journals have been the 8×10 size. So, I did what I’ve always done. On December 28th I began my search for the prized journal that would house my thoughts, praises and multiple worries for 2017 – with my eyes peeled toward the 8×10’s, of course.
Friends, I don’t know about you, but maybe you’re emotionally “up” 24/7. Maybe you ride the spiritually high wave all year round. If that’s that case, you’re one of kind. For most of us – me especially – my journey to the throne of God consists of highs and mediums and lows, times when I need a fresh touch from my heavenly Father. I’m sure you’d agree that the cares of this life have a way of getting to us.
Yet, as I was looking through the 8×10 spiral notebooks to find the perfect one, I “happened” to notice the smaller size journals next to the bigger ones. One of them in particular spoke to me. My heart leaped! My heart melted! My heart yearned for what its cover was suggesting. My heart KNEW that “this one” was begging me to take it home as my new 2017 best friend. Its scripture on the front cut through bone and marrow where God’s voice in Psalm 51:10 revealed my greatest desire, Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. YES, that was exactly the secret cry of my soul! Without even hesitating, I grabbed its cuddly size and cradled it all the way home.
Does God still speak to us? Does God really abide with us whether we’re up or lethargic or down? Is God really the hound of heaven who takes every opportunity to let us know He is with us? I’m CONVINCED the answer is yes, and He does it in the most subtle and creative ways.
It doesn’t take much to make this girl happy. Just look at my new journal. Doesn’t look a bit like my 2016 journal. But don’t you love that precious pink heart? And aren’t those black and gold polka-dots just the cutest ever? Friend, as we move into the New Year, I’m hoping your walk with God will be filled with polka-dot moments, too.
